Just arrived, I present the unboxing video of my new 12 inch MacBook (early 2016) in gold and with a 1.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core M7 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3,1 GHz). The updated 12 inch MacBook was released on April 19, 2016, almost one year after the introduction of the new MacBook. The updated 12 inch MacBook product line got better processors with less battery consumption meaning up to 10 hours battery life and a faster PCIe-based flash storage.

Apple Watch activation on wrist raise is not working in the vertical turn, demonstrated with an Apple Watch Sport with 42 mm Space Gray Aluminium Case and Black Sport Band (product number MJ3T2LL). Apple is describing the activation on wrist raise with “From the moment you wake the display with a simple raise of the wrist, you’ll be comfortable using Apple Watch”. That’s not entirely true: The activation on wrist raise is solely working the horizontal turn. However, it completely fails in any other direction.

Here are the two options to take screenshots on an Apple Watch:

miApple.me’s method: 🙂

• First press & hold the ‘Digital Crown‘ / ‘Home Button‘.
• Then immediately after, press the ‘Side button‘. Done!
• After you take a screenshot, you can find it in the Photos app on your iPhone.

The disadvantage of this method is that holding the Digital Crown to long will activate Siri.

Official Apple method (see Apple’s support document):

• Press and hold the ‘Side Button‘ on your Apple Watch.
• Then immediately press and release the ‘Digital Crown‘.
• After you take a screenshot, you can find it in the Photos app on your iPhone.

The disadvantage of that method is that holding the Side Button to long will activate the ‘Power off’ / ‘Power Reserve’ screen.

Taking screenshots on an Apple Watch is easy if you take care to press the second button immediately after you pressed & held the first one. By the way, I’m still testing my Apple Watch. More details are following! Do you have any special question for testing? Comment and I’ll have a look into it!

Learn how to set up an Apple Watch with your iPhone. To get started with your Apple Watch, pair and sync it with your iPhone.

I’m using the Apple Watch Sport either in combination with an iPhone 6 in silver, 128 GB or with an iPhone 5S in space gray, 32 GB, without any issues.

Note: You cannot pair an Apple Watch to multiple iPhones. If you want switch an Apple Watch to another iPhone, you have to unpair it from the first iPhone and pair and set it up with the new iPhone. For details see Apple’s support document “Unpair your Apple Watch and iPhone“, especially for making an Apple Watch backup.

Here’s how to set up an Apple Watch (see Apple’s support document):

Before you begin:

• To use your Apple Watch, you’ll need to pair it with an iPhone 5 or later running iOS 8.2 or later.
• You can pair one Apple Watch to your iPhone at a time. And one iPhone to your Apple Watch.
• On your iPhone, go to ‘Settings‘ > ‘Bluetooth‘ and make sure Bluetooth is on.
• Make sure your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network.
• Turn on your Apple Watch by pressing and holding the side button next to the Digital Crown until you see the Apple logo.
• Make sure both devices are charged, and keep them close together as you pair and sync them.
• Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
• Then tap a language on your Apple Watch. You can scroll through the list by rotating the Digital Crown or swiping the screen.

Pair your devices:

• Tap ‘Start Pairing‘ on your Apple Watch and again on your iPhone. A pairing animation should appear on your Apple Watch.
• Hold your iPhone over the pairing animation on your Apple Watch.
• Center the watch face in the onscreen viewfinder on your iPhone until a message says Your Apple Watch is Paired.
• If you don’t see the pairing animation or if your iPhone doesn’t read it, you can follow steps to pair your devices manually. After you’ve put on Apple Watch, chosen a language, and tapped ‘Start Pairing‘ on both devices, follow these steps:
  • Tap Pair Apple Watch Manually on your iPhone.
  • Tap the info icon on your Apple Watch. Your device’s name should show up on the watch face.
  • On your iPhone, tap the device name that matches the one you see on your Apple Watch display.
  • A six-digit code will appear on your Apple Watch. Enter that code on your iPhone to pair the two devices. Then follow steps to Set Up.

Set up and pick a wrist:

• On your iPhone, tap Set Up as New. If you’ve set up once before, you can tap Restore from Backup on your iPhone and follow onscreen steps to get to the Wrist Preference screen.
• Pick a wrist by tapping Left or Right on your iPhone. Then read terms and conditions and tap Agree to continue.
• Enter your Apple ID password. You’ll need to sign in with your Apple ID password to enjoy features like Digital Touch, Apple Pay and Handoff.

Review your settings:

• Your iPhone settings for Usage and Diagnostics, Location Services, and Siri will transfer to your Apple Watch, and the other way around. So if you change the settings of these services, those changes will apply to both of your devices.

Make a Passcode:

• On your iPhone, choose whether to make a passcode for your Apple Watch. You’ll need a Passcode for features like Apple Pay.
• If you tap Create a Passcode or Add a Long Passcode on your iPhone, you’ll be asked to make a personal code using your Apple Watch. Then decide whether your Apple Watch will unlock with your iPhone.

Sync your apps:

• Tap Install All to sync iPhone apps that work with Apple Watch. Only apps that are compatible with Apple Watch will sync. Tap Choose Later to sync only basic information like Mail, Contacts, and Messages.
• Your iPhone and Apple Watch will begin to sync. The length of this process varies depending on the amount of data you’re syncing. Keep your devices close together until you hear a chime and feel a gentle tapping sensation from your Apple Watch.

Lightning video capturing and recording for iPhone’s and iPad’s screen is newly introduced with iOS 8 and Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite. Apple’s primary intention of lightning video capturing and recording seems to be the use for video app previews, as stated on a Apple developer support page. The iPhone or iPad is set up as a camera on Quicktime player.

Nonetheless, lightning video capturing and recording is also working for iPhone and iPad screen mirroring without any developer login. The sole requirements are a connection via lightning cable, an iPhone or iPad running on iOS 8 and a Mac with Mac OS X 10.10 installed.

Maybe lightning video capturing and recording with iOS 8 and Mac OS X Yosemite could make apps like AirServer, Reflector or X-Mirage redundant, at least on iOS devices with lightning connector and Macs with Mac OS X Yosemite.

I tested the new feature with my iPad air running on iOS 8 and my MacBook pro 13” (retina, late 2013) using an original Apple lightning to USB cable:

1. Connect your iOS devices running on iOS 8 to your Mac running on Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite via lightning-to-USB cable.
2. Open ‘Quicktime Player‘.
3. Go to ‘File‘ and click on ‘New Movie Recording‘.
4. A new window opens. Click on the white triangle right beside the red recording button and select your iOS devices as a ‘Camera‘.
5. If the screen of your iOS device appears, you start recording by hitting the red button….

This set up works, but the video stability on my Mac was not good, there were several interruptions with a black screen. The reason for this is surely because of the Yosemite beta version. However, the lightning video recording worked without any problems. Here’s my very first lightning video capture taken with my iPad air:

Then I tried to make a video capturing with my iPhone 4S, also running on iOS 8. I connected it via “Apple 30-pin to USB Cable” connector, but no connection between my iPhone 4S and my MacBook pro was established. This means you need at leat an iOS device with lightning connector meaning iOS devices iPhone 5, 5S, iPad 4 and iPad air.

Lightning video capturing and recording will give an added value to iOS devices with lightning connectors running on iOS 8 and Macs running on Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite. For all other iOS devices or Windows PCs you have the fall back option to use apps like AirServer, Reflector or X-Mirage.

Today I show you how to use AirParrot and Reflector for AirPlay Screen Mirroring and Desktop Extension. I tested it on my MacBook Pro 13” (mid 2012) running on Mac OS 10.9.2 Mavericks and my Acer Aspire 1810T running on Windows 8.1 Pro:

• Desktop Extension of your Windows PC Screen to the Mac screen NOT working

From Mac (NO AirParrot, using native Mac OS X 10.9.2 AirPlay) to Windows PC (Reflector):

• AirPlay Screen Mirroring (complete screen)
• selective AirPlay Screen Mirroring (single app window) NOT working
• Desktop Extension of your Windows PC Screen to the Mac screen

Conclusion:

The team play of AirParrot and Reflector App is a seamless solution to mirror your screens between Mac and Windows PC. Mirroring from Mac to Windows PC exhibits multiple options. The installation of Reflector (or any other app turns your computer into an AirPlay receiver) is needed. AirParrot on your Windows PC is also necessary for AirPlay screen mirroring from Windows PC to Mac. AirParrot on your Mac can be replaced by the native Mac OS X AirPlay function (Mac OS X 10.8 and higher). However, the AirPlay screen mirroring options are reduced.

Reflector 1.3.3 is running seamlessly on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Reflector is an AirPlay receiver which connects iPods, iPads and iPhones to computers and projector. Reflector mirrors your device on a big screen without wires or complicated setups. There is both an Windows PC version and Mac OS X version available. 

The last version I tested was Reflector 1.2.3 on Windows 8. The result was disappointing, both the AirPlay mirroring and the video screen capture did not work. Now I checked Reflector 1.3.3 on my Acer Aspire 1810T running on Windows 8.1 Pro.

First you need to start the AirPlaying mirroring on your iPhone or iPad as you can see in the following video. Sometimes is takes some seconds until the Airplay connection is set up. In contrast to the predecessor versions, Reflector 1.3.3 is working seamlessly without any stopping, freezing or loosing connection on Windows 8.1. The response time is near by zero. Finally, the makers of Reflector, Squirrels, made a a good job.

However, the PC version of Reflector has one big disadvantage:

The screen video capturing is not available, like it is on the Mac version. Hence, if you want to capture an iPhone’s or iPad’s screen, you need to use another Windows app like Camtasia or Snagit. I took Camtasia for this video:

Summary:

Reflector 1.3.3 is running on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. The AirPlay mirroring works perfectly, but the video screen capture option is now missing. Now I can recommend Reflector for Windows for user who want to mirror their iPhone’s, iPod’s or iPad’s screen to a Windows PC.
