Since today, I have been blogging for 12 years and this is my 401th post on miapple.me -Tech.Blog! I published my first blog post “My First Apple Anniversary on January 21st, 2012!” on miapple.me on January 21st, 2012. However, there was not a standstill! The blog theme, The page speed and the miapple.me logo were insanely updated. 🙂 And the blog is ready for lift off again! Here’s the outcome of my work at miapple.me – Tech.Blog:

Page Speed Optimisation

Besides blogging and search engine optimisation, page speed optimisation of WordPress blogs is another blasting know-how I offer at pabst.socialmedia. 🙂

Content & Technical Marketing for Shopify stores

But that’s not at all: Pushing Shopify stores to the next level combining creating insane product descriptions and blogpost with SEO for B2B clients is the real reason why I’m lack of time for blogging at miapple.me within the last two years.

Nevertheless, I’ll try to do my very best to feed with new stuff this blog again. This is my I put in efforts in speed optimisation, new logo and new blog theme:

The brand-new miapple.me logo concept

The “miapple.me” logo concept harmoniously blends simplicity, innovation, and interconnectedness. The central design features a versatile file icon, symbolizing both technology and the essence of blogs. This icon is seamlessly integrated into the letter “M,” where parallel lines symbolize connectivity. The rounded, slightly bulky typography adds a friendly and approachable touch, reminiscent of modern tech design. A contemporary color palette, dominated by slate gray and accented with vibrancy, underscores the brand’s commitment to tech-savvy sophistication. This logo succinctly encapsulates the blog’s mission: delivering insightful, interconnected tech content in a visually engaging and user-friendly manner.

What do you think about the new logo? let me know in the comments!

Back to the facts. 🙂

Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “XYZ.local”. The backup disk image “XYZ.sparsebundle” is already in use. If the Time Machine backup fails, this is a common error message in macOS, especially since the introduction of macOS Big Sur 11 in 2020. Resolve the Time Machine Backup failing by adding full disk access for Time Machine in privacy settings. This Time Machine disk image problem increased again with the release of macOS Big Sur 11.3 in April 2021.

Fix macOS Time Machine Backup already in use could not complete backup

Time Machine backups to NAS systems, personal cloud storage or a server in a local network are often hit by this failure, especially Synology NAS like Disk Stations DS920+ (running on DSM 7.0 beta) and DS420+, QNAP NAS, Drobo NAS, WD My Cloud NAS or any network attached hard drive.

Fix macOS Time Machine Backup already in use privacy full disk access

How to fix „Time Machine backup disk image “XYZ.sparsebundle” is already in use.“

If you are unable to backup because of the message “The backup disk image .. already in use”, follow this instruction:

Open „System Preferences“ on your Mac or MacBook.

Click on „Security & Privacy“.

Select “Privacy”.

Click the lock to make changes and fill in your Mac’s password.

Select „Full disk access“.

Look for “Time Machine” and activate the check mark.

Close “System Preferences”. Done!

macOS 11 Big Sur removed the full disk access selection for Time Machine Backup. As a result, Time Machine is unable to complete the backup. Fix it by giving again Time Machine full disk access in the privacy section in “System Preferences.

Stay tuned! 😉

Calipio is an Austrian Startup inventing a novel and intuitive way of screen and webcam recording browser-based. In the free Version no registration is required. However, a registration is needed to access all features of Calipio screen recorder.

How to make screen recording with Calipio Screen Recorder

Directly on the homepage of Calipio you can select 3 options and start them immediately by clicking:

SCREEN: Record your screen

SCREEN and MICROPHONE: Record your screen and voice

SCREEN and MICROPHONE and CAMERA: Record your screen, voice and yourself via webcam

Here’s a small demo video made by miapple.me – Tech.Blog.

The advantages of Calipio Screen Recorder

No installation of an app or browser extension: Simply open the browser of your choice and start recording. Calipio is using state of the art technology and supports virtually all browsers and operating systems on desktop computers.

Sharing via cloud link: Share the link, whether by email, private messaging or on social media, including playback on the go.

No registration: Simply click on one of the three record buttons and share it with your network.

Free to use: No account for using needed.

End-to-end encryption: Once you hit that share button, only the recipient can open your recording.

Cloud storage: Video files are stored in a lightning fast and secure cloud.

The disadvantages of Calipio Screen Recorder

Up to now, Calipio solely works on desktop computers, not on iOS or Android browsers.

My personal opinion about Calipio Screen Recorder

What fascinated myself upmost is the intuitive end instant use of Calipio for screen recording. For bloggers and podcasters, Calipio is a very fast tool for screen recording and immediate sharing: Just to a button, record your screen with your voice and face (in contrast to Reflector App, which can only record your voice), share it and your done.

Calipio is a super fast and secure way for video screen recording and webcam recording. End-to-end encrypted, safely store in a secure cloud with easy sharing options.

Stay tuned! 😉

For getting in the setup process, you have to remove the file “.AppleSetUpDone” via Terminal or macOS Recovery mode. Then, you can recover the admin rights of your original admin account via the new administrator account. After that, you can reboot into your recovered one and delete the interim admin account.

Note: The following fixes apply to macOS Mojave 10.14, macOS Big Sur 11 and later. For macOS High Sierra 10.13 and earlier, fixing Mac no admin account is solved via the “Command – S” (SUM = Single User Mode) route which is deactivate in later macOS versions: How To Recover Lost Admin Rights On macOS High Sierra and Sierra, Mac OS X El Capitan And Yosemite

The following fix “Mac no admin account” works if you lost admin account and admin rights

during upgrading, e.g. from OS X 10.13 High Sierra to macOS Mojave 10.14 or to macOS Big Sur 11

after restoring your Mac from backup, or

after making heavy modifications to the system

The above mentioned situations can result in destroying or downgrading your admin account to a standard user account with no admin rights. In consequence, you cannot log in to your admin account or cannot use it for changing system settings.

Even though the Setup Assistant only runs once when you first install Mac OS X / macOS, it remains on your computer and is prevented from running by the presences of a hidden file called ‘.AppleSetupDone‘ in a system folder on your Mac. Therefore, to go through the Setup Assistant again you can create a fresh admin account, you simply need to remove this file:

Mac no admin account: How to recover admin rights by deleting .AppleSetupDone file via Terminal

Open Terminal in macOS.

Change the directory: Type cd /var/db and hit enter tab.

Run the following command to remove file “.AppleSetupDone”: Type sudo rm -f ./.AppleSetUpdone and hit enter tab.

Restart your Mac and go through the Setup Process. Create a new account and take a DIFFERENT username than your Standard user account (e.g. “Backup Admin”)

After logging in, open System Preferences and select your Standard user account and check the box labeled “Allow user to administer this computer” (Note: if the box is grayed out, click the lock icon the lower left to enabled editing)

Log out of your Mac and log in in as your original account.

Either delete the Admin account you created in step 4 or, even better, leave it as a backup account.

Mac no admin account: How to recover admin rights by deleting .AppleSetupDone file via macOS Recovery Mode

Shut down your Mac.

Reboot your Mac and press and hold “Command + R“.

At the “macOS Recovery”-Screen select a user, click on “Next” and enter the user’s password. Note: If you do not know the password click on “Forgot all passwords” and sign in with your Apple ID. This step is needed if you secured your Mac with FileVault.

On the next screen select Disk Utility and mount all internal discs, especially “Macintosh HD – Data“.

Close Disk Utility and open Terminal via selecting Utilities and then Terminal.

At the prompt (in my case [-bash-3.2#]) type cd /Volumes/”Macintosh HD”/var/db and hit enter tab.

Run the following command to remove file “.AppleSetupDone”: Type rm -f ./.AppleSetUpdone and hit enter tab.

Then reboot your Mac: Type reboot and hit enter tab.

Your Mac reboots. Go through the Setup Process.

Lost access to admin account on macOS 10.14 Mojave or later, can easily restored by reactivating Apple’s Setup Assistant tool through deleting the file “.AppleSetupDone” via terminal or macOS recovery mode. After rebooting your Mac or MacBook you walk through the process to set up a fresh administrator account with full admin rights.

Stay tuned! 😉

In principle, iTunes (iTunes 11 up to version iTunes 12.10.10 at the moment) is running both on Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
At least, it seems that there are three main problems: Missing or wrong administrator rights caused during the upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 8 from Windows 7, artefacts of previous iTunes installation on Windows 7 or Windows Vista and/or missing files on Windows 8, needed to run iTunes. Hence, if you got problems with installing iTunes on Windows, you may have to check each single fix described in the following. This fix works on iTunes for Windows 10, too.

1. How to install iTunes correctly on Windows 10 and Windows 8

First, if you have already installed an iTunes version on your non-Windows 8 PC, de-authorisize your PC from iTunes. Why? Because after upgrading to Windows 8 or Windows 10, iTunes will recognize the Windows 8 PC as a new device meaning you will have 2 out of 5 allowed devices consumed with one and the same PC. And iTunes will only allow 5 devices authorized with one single iTunes account at all!
Second, be sure that either it is your first iTunes installation on your PC or you uninstalled iTunes properly before you moved to Windows 8. Here’s a good deinstallation guide to follow exactly!

Download and save the full install package from iTunes on your hard drive. Do not use the web installer! So don’t go to iTunes and just hit Install. You need to use to download and save the file!

Go to the iTunes installer file and do a right-click an go to ‘Properties’. There are five tabs across the top: ‘General’, ‘Compatibility’, ‘Digital Signatures’, ‘Security’ and ‘Details’. In ‘Compatibility’ hit the ‘Change Settings for All Users’ button, then check of ‘Run as Windows 7’ (I would recommend to try at first the installation without checking the compatibility mode) and ‘Run as Admin’. Hit ‘Apply’ and go back out to the usual tabs in ‘Properties’.

In the next step go ‘Security’ and click on ‘Advanced’. In ‘Advanced’ you’ll likely see one or two user types labeled ‘Account Unknown’ with a long number string after. Not exactly sure what these are (probably Apple related), but they cause problems with installers, so we are going to take them out. Click on one account, hit ‘Advanced’ and hit ‘Disable Inheritance’ and then hit the button that pops up for ‘Convert Inherited Permissions to explicit permissions on this object’. After this select the two Unknown profiles and hit ‘Remove’ and ‘Apply’.

Next, go to the last tab in this group (still in the Advanced settings menu) which is titled ‘Effective Access’. Hit ‘Select a User’ and type in the name you use to log in to Windows 8 with in the open box, and then hit ‘Check Names’ (your full user profile name will come up) and hit ‘OK’. At that point you can hit the ‘OK’ until you are out of the Proprieties menu.

Run install and iTunes 11 should work now.

2. How to fix iTunes on Windows 10 and Windows 8, if iTunes will not work

Fix Method A: Install Windows 8 Media Center

This is my favorite method because it works for me and my Acer Aspire 1810T running on Windows 8.1. Some say that missing files on Windows 8 are the reason for problems with iTunes on Windows 8 because they got the following error message:

“You can’t install iTunes on this version of Windows 8. Click Add features to Windows 8 to add the Media Center Pack. Then, restart the installation.”

The missing files are only part of the Windows 8 Media Center. At the moment, Windows 8 Media Center cost around and Windows 8 Pro is needed: To install Windows 8 Media Center Pack, you must be running Windows 8 Pro.
Maybe this is the reason why people do not install Windows 8 Media Center. But I personally do not know any person with iTunes problems who installed the Media Center!

Fix Method B: Change the compatibility to Windows 7 or Windows Vista

On the desktop right-click on the iTunes short cut icon and hit ‘Properties’.

Go to ‘Compatibility’, click on ‘Compatibility Mode’, select either ‘Windows 7’ or ‘Windows Vista’ and hit ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’.

Now start iTunes and it should work.

Install iTunes on Windows: iTunes Compatibility Mode on Windows 8

Fix Method C: Extract the compressed installation files and install iTunes

If you got the error message “Can not execute” while trying to install iTunes, the trick to overcome that problem is the option to extract itunes64setup.exe with WinRAR or similar programs. The folder contains 6 files:

AppleApplicationSupport.msi

AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi

AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi

Bonjour64.msi

iTunes64.msi

SetupAdmin.exe

Run SetupAdmin.exe as administrator and iTunes should be installed.

Fix Method D: Run a Microsoft Fixit

This Fixit fixes problems with programs that can’t be installed or uninstalled.

Fix Method E: Renew or correct your permission on Windows 8

During the setting up of Windows 8 / upgrading to Windows 8 you will be asked to sign in either with a Microsoft account or without a Microsoft account. Signing in with a Microsoft account offers you a lot of new and additional features like

Your friends’ contact info and status automatically stay up to date from places like Outlook.com, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

You can get to and share your photos, documents, and other files from places like SkyDrive, Facebook, and Flickr.

Your personal settings are synced to any Windows 8 and Windows RT PCs, including your themes, language preferences, browser favorites, and most apps.

You can get apps in the Windows Store and use them on up to five Windows 8 and Windows RT PCs. (Some apps require specific hardware configurations.)

because your account is connected to the cloud.

This Microsoft account will have full administrator rights. However, if you hadn’t signed in with the same Microsoft account in Windows 7 or if you had used a local account with another user name (different username as your Microsoft account), you maybe will have different rights. and this could be the reason for problems while installing iTunes on windows 8 or Windows 8.1.

Therefore, check and follow the steps 2. to 4. described at the beginning of this post to correct your user rights and try again the installation. If you fail again, remove iTunes artifacts completely as described in step 1.

Following the installation guide at the beginning of this post or, in the case of no success, following at least one of the described fixing methods, iTunes should work on your PC running on Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. Please, let me know if you succeeded and if not, what kind of problem you face!

Sync iCloud calendars to android via a CalDAV client. Hold your Apple calendars up to date with a two-way synchronisation (not just a transfer!) of iCloud Calendards to android phone or android tablet, e.g. a Samsung Galaxy S10, S20 or S21. I sync my iCloud Calendars to android via the free Google Play Store app “Sync for iCloud (Calendars)” which works with an app-specific password for your iCloud account. “Sync or iCloud” runs perfectly on Android 10 and Android 11.

Most android devices do not have a built-in CalDAV client. Hence, there is the need to install a CalDAV client on android devices to sync iCloud contacts from iPhone, iPad or Mac. In the same manner, iCloud Contacts are synced with android devices via CardDAV protocol. You do not need to transfer iCloud Calendars to a Google Account or copy your iCloud Calendars to android phones!

My decision was to use the free Sync for iCloud Calendar to sync iCloud calendars because of its also free CardDAV-companion Sync for iCloud Contacts and not to take the often recommended app SmoothSync for Cloud Calendars because of its Samsung Galaxy S5 limitations. Sync for iCloud (Calendars) offers:

2 way synchronization

Connects directly to iCloud servers – no third party servers are used.

2 step authentication including a guide

App specific password can be generated without leaving the app.

Background synchronization

Multiple accounts and multiple calendars

Use your default calendar to manage events

Create new calendars from the app itself

How to set up Sync for iCloud Calendards to Android Phones and tablets

1. Install Sync for iCloud Calendar from Google Play and tap on ‘Install‘.
2. Then ‘Accept‘ the app’s need to access your contacts and calendar.
3. After successfully installation, open Sync for iCloud Calendar and tap on ‘Add Calendar Account‘.
4. Select ‘Sync for iCloud Calendar‘ as account.
5. Fill in your iCloud user name (Apple ID / iCloud email) and your iCloud app-specific password.
6. Select the iCloud calendars via taping on the link.
7. iCloud Family calendar is also supported and can be selected.
8. Fill in the contacts account name, e.g.’iCloud Calendars‘.

Notes:

This tutorial was performed on a Samsung Galaxy S5 mini (SM-G800F) running on android 4.4.2 KitKat. The successful set up was reviewed in January 2021 using a Samsung Galaxy S10 plus running an android 10 and android 11. Setting up the CalDAV client to sync iCloud Calendars is very similar for the other apps.

Sync frequency: Changes made on the android Phone are synced immediately to iCloud and vice versa within some minutes.

If you want to set up manually CalDAV : The iCloud CalDAV calendar server is p06-caldav.icloud.com. If ‘p06-‘ doesn’t work go to icloud.com calendar web app click on the sharing symbol, make the selected calendar public (just for a moment, undo after that) and you will see a link like ‘webcal://p0X-calendarws.icloud.com/ca/subscribe/…‘. Note the underlined ‘p0X’ and you have your iCloud CalDAV calendar server: p0X-caldav.icloud.com.

If you need more tweaks to get iCloud functions synced on an Android Phone, have a look at these “iCloud-to-Android”-tutorials:

Sync Android Photos To iCloud Photo Library And Photo Stream

Syncing iCloud calendars with android devices works seamlessly by using a CalDAV client. Sync for iCloud Calendar is a free CalDAV client app that does what it should without any problems. What CalDAV client are you using? And what kind of android device do you have? Let us know and comment!

Hold your Apple contacts up to date with a two-way synchronisation (not just a transfer!) of iCloud Contacts to android phone or android tablet, e.g. a Samsung Galaxy S10, S20 or S21. I sync my iCloud Contacts to android via the free Google Play Store app “Sync for iCloud Contacts” which works with an app-specific password for your iCloud account. “Sync or iCloud contacts” runs perfectly on Android 10 and Android 11.

Most android devices do not have a built-in CardDAV client. Hence, there is the need to install a CardDAV client on android devices to sync iCloud contacts from iPhone, iPad or Mac. In the same manner, iCloud calendars are synced with android devices via CalDAV protocol. You do not need to transfer iCloud Contacts to a Google Account or copy your iCloud contacts to android phones!

My decision was to use the free Sync for iCloud Contacts to sync iCloud contacts because of its also free CalDAV-companion Sync for iCloud Calendar and not to take the often recommended app SmoothSync for Cloud Contacts because of its Samsung Galaxy S5 limitations. Sync for iCloud Contacts offers:

2 way synchronisation

Supporting multiple accounts

Syncing directly to your iCloud account

Using the default contacts app

Setting sync interval for each account

2 step authentication including a guide

Syncing in the background.

Syncing contact images.

Connecting directly to iCloud servers. No third party servers used.

This tutorial was performed on a Samsung Galaxy S5 mini (SM-G800F) running on android 4.4.2 KitKat. The successful set up was reviewed in January 2021 using a Samsung Galaxy S10 plus running an android 10 and android 11. Setting up the CardDAV client to sync iCloud contacts is very similar for the other apps.

Sync frequency: Changes made on the android Phone are synced immediately with iCloud.

For syncing changes made on iCloud / Mac / iPhone / iPad do a manual sync. Go to ‘Contacts‘ app > ‘Settings‘ > ‘Contacts‘ > ‘Accounts‘ > ‘Sync for iCloud Contacts‘ > ‘Sync now‘

If you want to set up manually CardDAV : The iCloud CardDAV contacts server is contacts.icloud.com.

After this initial sync, the use of an IFTTT (“If This Then That”) applet automatically syncs every new Android photo:

On your Android Phone, download and install IFTTT Android app.

On your iPhone or iPad, download and install IFTTT iOS app, too.

Open IFTTT, login or create an account.

Activate the applet “Sync Android Photos to iOS iCloud Photos” by IFTTT maker miappleme by turning it on.

Grant IFTTT permissions for accessing Android Photos and iOS Photos service.

Turn notifications on, if you want to receive notifications when applet runs.

Create iCloud Photo album or leave it blank. The default iCloud photo album’s name will be then ‘IFTTT’.

Now the applet is turned on and activated. Tap on ‘Check now’ to see the applet correctly running.

Notes:

If you hadn’t already activated the services “IFTTT“, “Android Photos” and “iOS Photos“, you now have to do so.

The very first activity run of IFTTT and the creation of the sync album could take a while (approx. up to 1h), after that the activity runs very quickly. Please, be patient!

If you need more tweaks to get iCloud functions synced on an Android Phone, have a look at these “iCloud-to-Android”-tutorials:
